Workshop: Emotional Impact of Separation and Divorce on Children

Understanding the emotional impact separation and divorce can have on children and how to support families to minimise harmful effects.

  • When parents separate, children are often the forgotten ones
  • It is easy to focus on the adults wishes and not to understand what children need to help them through this process
  • When their parents part there can be long-term effects for children. These are often misunderstood

What the workshop will cover

  • How you can support parents to make the transition less traumatic for children
  • What children really need at this time
  • What effect parental conflict has on children's emotional state
  • How you can tell if a child is suffering emotionally
  • whether there are any programmes that can help children cope
  • What is helpful advice to give families and
  • Emotional impact and responding appropriately
  • Resources available locally
  • Legal processes affecting children
  • The family dynamics of separation and divorce and children's experience
  • How children can be positively supported through the process
  • Working with parents to minimise harmful effects on children

Who should register?

This workshop is particularly suitable for

  • Refuge staff
  • Those supporting parents through the Family Court
  • Family Support and Whanau Workers
  • Teachers, and Early Childhood Professionals and staff
  • Health Professionals
  • Counsellors
  • Social Workers, Youth Workers and Community Workers

This workshop will involve small and large group discussion, lecture and role play. Participants are also encouraged to share their ideas and experiences. Handouts will be provided and a certificate of attendance will be given to all those completing the workshop.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an introductory workshop. Attendance at this workshop does not qualify you as a child counsellor or therapist.

Cancellation and Refund Policies
CPS reserves the right to cancel any workshop due to minimum registrations. Refunds will be given to participants of workshops cancelled by CPS.

Registrations cancelled by participants after registration will incur an administration fee of $50.00. No refunds will be applicable on or after workshop start date
