Welcome to CPS...
For most children, New Zealand is a wonderful place to grow up in. Some are not so lucky. Childhood trauma, abuse, violence and neglect are a fact of life (and sometimes death) for too many of our young people.
Child abuse, violence and trauma affects thousands of children with over 110,000 referrals made to Child, Youth and Family in the year ending June 2009.
- Approximately 11 children are killed through physical abuse
- 90% of all child deaths are perpetrated by someone the child knew.
- Four out of five children killed by their caregiver were NOT known to CYF or the Police.
- Approximately 15% of children are born at risk of abuse
- More than 80,000 children are witnesses of family violence

CPS is a national charitable trust, dedicated to preventing harm and violence to children in New Zealand.
As a strong advocate for the rights of children, CPS promotes, encourages and supports prevention activities and efforts at a local and national level, through individual and community programmes.

Children will only be protected when key people can recognise and respond when children are at risk and take the steps needed to keep them safe.
CPS aims to increase community awareness and raise the skill and confidence of all to prevent harm to children.

Preventing child abuse is everyone's responsibility.
If a child is being harmed by a member of his or her whanau, then it may only be someone outside the family who can act to stop the hurt.

CPS believes that more people need to accept this responsibility. Our goal is for a community where everyone looks out for children. By working intensively within a specific community we can work towards this outcome and at the same time help strengthen the community as a whole.
We work closely with our funders and supporters to ensure specific projects support specific communities. Three such successful projects, have included:
Waikato Schools’ Child Protection project Tindall Foundation community based programmes, and Trust Waikato South Waikato and King Country project
Outcomes from these projects have been well beyond expectations with participants making a pro-active, behavioural change approach to child protection.
