Welcome to CPS...
For most children, New Zealand is a wonderful place to grow up in. Some are not so lucky. Childhood trauma, abuse, violence and neglect are a fact of life (and sometimes death) for too many of our young people. Child abuse, violence and trauma affects thousands of children with over 63,000 referrals made to Child Youth and Family in 2006. It is estimated that each year in New Zealand: - Every month one child is killed through physical abuse
- 9,800 children are hospitalized with preventable injuries
- There is a $5.32 billion fiscal and economic cost to New Zealand on the long term effects of childhood abuse
- Approximately 15% of children are born at risk
- More than 80,000 children are witnesses of family violence
- One family member is killed through family violence every 12½ days
Whenever child is killed or seriously hurt, there is someone who says, “I was worried about that child, but didn’t know what to do”. Child Protection Studies (CPS) was born as a response to the staggering economic and social impact of child abuse and cruelty to children. Since 1994, CPS has been educating New Zealanders about how to keep children safe from harm. | | Hot Tips for Parents Practical ideas for parents and other family members to help keep their children safe. CPS has earned a reputation for excellence in its child protection programmes which are aimed at improving the skills of all those whose work involves children, to enable them to intervene early to ensure children are safe. Programmes are premised on the philosophy of multi-disciplinary and inter-sectorial participation. A child who is suffering from abuse or witnessing adult violence needs someone to take action to keep him or her safe. But because most children will not openly disclose that they are being traumatised, it is up to the adults in the child’s world to recognise the signs and work together to ensure that children do not fall through the gaps. Programmes have been assessed and evaluated and student feedback shows that those who have undertaken CPS Programmes do make a difference.
CPS is a New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) authorised and registered provider. The Child Protection Studies Programme and the Diploma in Child Protection Studies are both NZQA recognised and approved programmes.
Congratulations on taking the first step – your learning and contribution to the dream we share will make a valued difference to keeping children safe.
