Welcome to CPS...
For most children, New Zealand is a wonderful place to grow up in. Some are not so lucky. Childhood trauma, abuse, violence and neglect are a fact of life (and sometimes death) for too many of our young people. Child abuse, violence and trauma affects thousands of children with over 63,000 referrals made to Child Youth and Family in 2006. It is estimated that each year in New Zealand: - Every month one child is killed through physical abuse
- 9,800 children are hospitalized with preventable injuries
- There is a $5.32 billion fiscal and economic cost to New Zealand on the long term effects of childhood abuse
- Approximately 15% of children are born at risk
- More than 80,000 children are witnesses of family violence
- One family member is killed through family violence every 12½ days
CPS is a national charitable trust, dedicated to preventing harm and violence to children in New Zealand. As a strong advocate for the rights of children, CPS promotes, encourages and supports prevention activities and efforts at the local and national level, through individual and community programmes. |
| Hidden in Front of Us A new book to protect children from abuse is being developed by Anthea Simcock, CEO of CPS. CPS is eager to speak to people who could be interested in sharing their story of abuse [Download More Information] | Children will only be protected when key people can recognise and respond when children are at risk and take the steps needed to keep them safe. CPS aims to increase community awareness and raise the skill and confidence of all to prevent harm to children. |

Preventing child abuse is everyone’s responsibility. If a child is being harmed by a member of his or her whanau, then it may only be someone outside the family who can act to stop the hurt.
CPS believes that more people need to accept this responsibility. Our goal is for a community where everyone looks out for children. By working intensively within a specific community we can work towards this outcome and at the same time help strengthen the community as a whole.
We work closely with our funders and supporters to ensure specific projects support specific communities. Three such successful projects, have included:
Waikato Schools’ Child Protection project Tindall Foundation community based programmes, and Trust Waikato South Waikato and King Country project
Outcomes from these projects have been well beyond expectations with participants making a pro-active, behavioural change approach to child protection. |
